ERIC SAYS In the early days of digital video, established filmmakers like Spike Lee and Lars von Trier embraced the immediacy and lo-fi look of the technology for new creative challenges (think Bamboozled and the Dogme 95 movement), while emerging voices like Joe Swanberg and Greta Gerwig built careers around the affordability of these new tools in the mumblecore moment. It’s in that spirit of creative rejuvenation that directors/stars Lucy Sandler and Mechi Lakatos, collaborators for more than seven years, conceived a modern-day comedy built around rules suggested by Dogme and mumblecore, shooting on miniDV and embracing the anarchic spirit of improvisation.
Both a hilarious showcase for an excellent alt-comedy ensemble and a unique aesthetic experiment, Danny Is My Boyfriend will not only goose your funny bone, but offer wildly inventive images, characters, lines—and such a very good dog—that will live on in your imagination.
