ERIC SAYS Baltimorean Marnie Ellen Hertzler’s Eternity One offers a beautiful, moving, and urgent portrait of nearby Tangier Island, Virginia.
Hertzler’s poetic lens finds its center in Mary Ella, a young child learning about climate change through first-hand experience with their hometown’s rapidly shrinking shores. But as it builds, Eternity One expands intuitively outward, turning to regional marine biologists and global futurists for perspectives on a rapidly changing world—even as it always returns to Tangier and its small, tight-knit community for a sensory-rich and warm documentary experience. Working in the creative non-fiction tradition of filmmakers such as Theo Anthony (Rat Film; All Light, Everywhere) and Agnès Varda (The Gleaners and I, The Beaches of Agnès), Hertzler’s second feature is nothing less than a new major entry in the cannon of Baltimore-made films.
Eternity One spotlights the talents of top-notch artists that are Baltimore-based and/or New/Next alums. It boasts a gorgeous original score by Beach House (Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand), is executive produced by Theo Anthony, edited by Pisie Hochheim (N/N shorts Cycles and Seeds), produced by Emma Hannaway (OBEX) and Riel Roch Decter (Carpet Cowboys) and features additional cinematography by Corey Hughes (N/N feature Your Final Meditation), to name just a few.
New/Next is proud to offer two opportunities to celebrate this fantastic homegrown film: our Opening Night screening Thursday, October 1st, its Maryland premiere; and a Sunday matinee reprise October 4th. In addition to director Marnie Ellen Hertzler, additional special guests from Tangier Island and Eternity One’s filmmaking team are expected at both screenings.
