Assets & Liabilities

Assets & Liabilities

Director(s): Zach Weintraub

Screenings: Fri Oct 2 10:45 PM · Charles 2

Film description: Zach, a burnt-out suburban father, seizes a rare opportunity to live out a day as his younger, less responsible self. A spontaneous encounter with a fellow skater feels like a victory until an unsettling connection between the two emerges. The result is a forcible confrontation with his own bourgeois standing that shatters the illusion of his carefree day and sends it spiraling into dark territory.

ERIC SAYS Even as an admirer of director/star Zach Weintraub’s prior work as director (The International Sign for Choking) and performer (A Dim Valley), Assets & Liabilities took me entirely by surprise. Its writing and performances brim with diabolical dark humor, rendered with a DIY immediacy and naked, almost confrontational rawness that feels thrillingly inspired.

At the crux of Assets & Liabilities is self-deprecating satire: its protagonist still likes to think of himself as a cool skater dude, even when confronted with daily evidence that he’s become a suburban father and husband on a collision course with middle age. Even worse: he’s a landlord. And when he decides to pick his skateboard back up and head to the park one day while the wife and kid are away, he sets in motion a sequence of humiliations small and large that would make Todd Solondz blush. Running just over an hour and packing big laughs into every minute of its run time, Assets and Liabilities is a marvel of DIY efficiency, an anti-buddy cringe comedy of the very highest order.
